In President Uchtdorf's talk You Matter to Him in the opening session of the October 2011 General Conference, he followed a similar theme to his Forget Me Not talk that still has the Relief Society sisters sighing longingly weeks later. Both touched on the importance of individuals, as insignificant as we may think we are, that God knows and loves each of us.
While he points out that we are less than we suppose, compared to the grandeur of God and all his creations, we are also greater than we suppose. Man was the crowning creation and the reason for the rest of his creations.
A pastor of small congregation who often writes thinly veiled anti-Mormon articles in the local paper comments regularly about how we project ourselves onto things we don't understand. Supposedly since we can't understand the enormity that is God, we try to make him like ourselves. We give Him a body and make Him a man. Our pastor friend happens to have it backwards, however. It's not that we have made God like us but that God has made us like Him. Our pastor friend falls into the same trap that other evangelicals find themselves in, one of pride, which is the next point in President Uchtdorf's talk. This pride is related to being supposedly a better brand of Christian than the LDS faithful. I'm sure the LDS faithful are often as guilty of this same sin as we return the favor.
It is amazing to have someone of President Uchtdorf's current status and influence as a person to look up to, especially knowing his humble background. In spite of how much cooler he is than any of us, he retains his humility and uplifts all around him.
